Local Advocacy Services
About Us
Established in 1980, Citizen Advocacy has been connecting people in the local community for over 40 years. We are a not-for-profit organisation funded by the federal government, Department of Social Services (DSS) under the National Disability Advocacy Program (NDAP).
We bring together people from all walks of life to be a voice, companion and champion for individuals with intellectual disability who have limited social connections. Individuals are matched with a caring member of the community who volunteer their time and have similar interests, allowing them to form a unique and meaningful relationship centered around friendship.
Volunteers engage in a variety of activities with the person they are matched with, such as helping them develop life skills, participating in recreational outings, assisting with daily tasks, or simply being a friendly and supportive presence in their lives. They have the flexibility to shape their involvement around their schedule, so whether they choose to dedicate an hour a week or engage more casually, they can make a difference in a way that fits their life. No specific qualifications or experience is required to volunteer. Training and ongoing support is provided giving access to workshops, events and opportunities to connect with other volunteers.
If you believe in making a positive impact in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, consider joining us as a volunteer. Your support can make a meaningful difference – together, we can create lasting connections and enhance the well-being of those in need.
Additionally, if you, or someone you know with intellectual disability could benefit from the companionship and support of a friend and ally, reach out to us today.
Together, let's build a community where compassion thrives, friendships flourish, and every individual, regardless of ability, finds the support and connection they deserve.
