Deaf Bushwalking Victoria in Auslan – Deaf Bushwalking Victoria was initially was just a family outing for Karli, her husband Simon and their young children. As time went on, more and more people were invited to come along and it was formally established as a function of Karli Health Centre in about 2005.
Karli Health Centre believes strongly in the interconnectedness of physical and mental health and that good physical and mental health builds a strong, resilient spirit. And the Deaf Bushwalking group was a wonderful way to put some of our beliefs into actual practice.
As Karli Health Centre has grown – and also because of the impact of the lockdowns in 2020 due to Covid 19 – it was time for Karli and Simon to step back from the group. However, we felt strongly that we wanted to continue to provide support to the group, so KHC has now handed over the organisation and facilitation of the group. In 2021, we are looking forward to re-establishing the group with group leaders Annie Wendell and Michelle Hudges.
The group has monthly bushwalks, each month in a different location. Each walk and its level of difficulty is advertised prior to the day.
Anyone is welcome, but the language of the group is Auslan. This is also an important part of this group, bringing together those who share the same language. You don’t need to be fluent in Auslan, beginners are welcome.
Please contact us to find out more. We look forward to seeing you in 2021!!
GP Health Program – Do you have questions that are not really answered properly by your own local GP and do you feel you want to take control of your health but feel powerless? Dr Leonora has made a series of short video clips in Auslan, you can have a look at them on Leonora’s Youtube channel.
