The state electorate of Northern Tablelands has an approximate area of 53,000 km².

It is comprised of 66 suburbs including Arding, Auburn Vale, Back Creek, Bald Blair, Bald Nob, Bassendean, Briarbrook, Brockley, Brodies Plains, Brushy Creek, Capoompeta, Castle Doyle, Cherry Tree Hill, Dangarsleigh, Diehard, Donald Creek, Duval, Falconer, Furracabad, Gilgai, Glen Nevis, Gostwyck, Gragin, Green Hills and Gundamulda plus parts of Stannum.

It is comprised of 110 localities including Aberfoyle, Abington, Armidale, Ashford, Ashley, Atholwood, Backwater, Bakers Creek, Balala, Baldersleigh, Balfours Peak, Bangheet, Ben Lomond, Berrigal, Bingara, Biniguy, Black Mountain, Blue Nobby, Boggabilla, Bonshaw, Boomi, Boonal, Boorolong, Bukkulla and Bullarah plus parts of another 15 localities.

It is comprised of the councils of Armidale Regional, Glen Innes Severn, Gwydir, Inverell, Moree Plains and Uralla.

It is surrounded by the state electorates of Barwon, Clarence, Lismore, Oxley, Southern Downs, Tamworth and Warrego.

It is comprised of parts of the federal electorates of New England and Parkes.
